The children then went out for a walk at the nearby garden to collect some dried leaves that they can use to make their big shelter. The children worked together to paste the leaves onto the umbrella. Teachers reinforced the concept that when they ooperate and work together, they would be able to complete the task earlier.

NURSERY!
KIDS IN-CHARGE 2012
For this year’s Kidz-in-Charge, the
children were introduced to the term “Cooperation” where they learnt and
understood the meaning of cooperation through different activities conducted
outdoors as well as in the classroom. A book called “A Very Big Storm” was
introduced and read to them. Through discussions held in the classroom,
children were able to tell what they understood by the word “Cooperation”.
This year’s Kidz-in-Charge also gave
an opportunity for the parents to participate in storytelling sessions on
“Cooperation”. Children created different artworks which symbolized the meaning
of “Cooperation”. During the implementation of these activities, children were
paired up to help them understand the meaning of cooperation as they worked
together to complete their artwork.
Let me bring you the journey of the
children before the actual day of Kidz-In-Charge.
Firstly, we had parents as the
mystery readers coming to the centre to do a storytelling session with the
children on the book “Cooperation”. We
had parents, Miss Liu and Mrs Lim whom brought their own books and created
their own props for their storytelling. Children were seen enjoying themselves and
engrossed during the storytelling session. Each of them was excited to answer
the questions asked by the parents.
Before Miss Liu began to read the
book, she asked the children to guess what a turnip was. When the child was
able to give the correct answer, she rewarded the child with a sticker.
Children were listening attentively
to the story as she showed to the children every pages of the book. The
children got to share what they knew about the story to Miss Liu.
She paused at certain junctures in the story to ask questions as she read the book. Children were looking forward to answer the questions as they wanted the lovely stickers.
Mrs Lim brought her own made props to the class
to do the storytelling. Before she began, she showed a blue fish for the
children to make a guess on what the story could be about.
At the end of the session, the children wanted to
see and touch the props that Mrs Lim has created. They really loved the props
that were
used in the storytelling.
Next, the
children did the ‘Swimmy Fish’. In
this activity, the children were asked to paint the fish creatively using a
cotton bud after the story entitled “Swimmy Fish” was being read to them. They
could choose the different coloured paints provided to them and painted the
fish beautifully.
At the end
of this activity, the fishes were combined together to form a ‘Big Fish’ just
like how all the tiny fishes got together to form a big fish in the story. They
understood that teamwork was needed to accomplish a certain task.
Moving on to the next
activity, the children were paired up with their partner to create hands
printing collage where they worked together to create their masterpiece. They
were seen discussing on how to place their hands on the drawing paper.
Apart of
creating their own masterpiece, they had game which taught them about
“Cooperation”. This activity is called “Assemble the square”. In this activity,
the children were divided into groups of 6. Each one would have the shape with
a number. They need to work as a team to form a square.
Finally, the children did a
‘Handprint Rainbow’. Children were happy and excited to show their hands that
were painted with different colours to their peers. Each group would share
about their understanding on “Co-operation”.

One, two, three! Coopaliciouz!
Cooperation is defined as the act of working together towards a common goal or purpose.
For Kidz-In-Charge 2012, children learnt about being cooperative with others, working together as a team, working together in pairs and helping one another to achieve common goals. They learnt the concept of cooperation through reading and listening to stories read to them by some mystery readers.
Who were these mysterious mystery readers?
Teacher Christine
This was Mo Lao Shi's friend who was also a teacher from another preschool. She was reading a Chinese storybook related to the theme on cooperation. Children were very responsive throughout the whole storytelling session. Thumbs up! :P
Now that they have learnt about the meaning of cooperation and the ways to demonstrate cooperation to others, they were ready to put what they have learnt into action!
The Three-Legged Race
Children were discussing with their partners on strategies to win the race. They were really working together! :)
| Rakin and Jia Xi were winning the race. |
Oh! Let's head back to the starting point!
They were really enjoying this outdoor activity very much. As a suggestion, parents can conduct this activity with your children too! :)
Balancing the Ball
In this activity, the rule of the game is to balance the ball with a partner just by using the forehead while walking towards the finishing point. It was no easy task but the children never gave up!
Ocean and Yanxi both enjoying the game. :)
Lu Young and Dion seemed to be concentrating a lot on the ball. Hmm..
Next up, Fang Fei and Dillon! With the difference in their heights, were they able to make it? Yes of course! :P
Ya An and Siyuan were slowly walking towards the finishing line as they were determined not to let the ball drop.
Remember the Coopaliciouz dance? Here, the children were busy learning the steps to the dance. They really enjoyed it and even told the teacher to repeat the video.
Making Jewellery
In this activity, children worked together to design their own necklaces and crowns. They used different strips of coloured paper and joined them together to make their desired creation.
Sze Hui and Yamone were working together to make a very long necklace.
Ya An and Cedric were gluing the ends of the strips of paper together to make a necklace too!
Yanxi and Tiffany gave each other a "high five" after they have successfully finished making their necklace! That's the spirit children! :P
Making Shelter
(inspired by the book "A Very Big Storm")
Inspired by the story "A Very Big Storm" where all the animals worked together to build a shelter, children also decided to make their own 2D shelter together with a friend and they really made beautiful shelters using their own creativity!
Princess and Angel worked together to make a castle-like shelter. Look at how pretty their shelter was!
Rakin said he wanted to place a chair in his shelter. Xander on the other hand, was quietly thinking of what other materials to add for the shelter.
Jia Xi and Raiden did not even utter a word as they were fully concentrating on designing their shelter together!
Wen Xin and Shi Tian agreed that they wanted their shelter where all the princesses could hide in! How adorable right? :)

Kindergarten 2!
"What is CO-OPERATION?"
Reflecting on the theme of co-operation, the children used recycled toilet rolls and paint to make mobiles, on which they wrote what co-operation means to them. Teamwork was also displayed during the process as the children helped one another to put on the mobiles.
"Mystery Readers"
In mid-April, students from Lakeside Primary School were invited over to read books about co-operation. This was to create different experience as hildren of relatively older ages engaged the K2 children in group and individual storytelling sessions. The enthusiasm that came from all the children-storytellers and listeners alike, produced an enriching and hearty experience for all.
"PUT THE FIRE OUT!"
Following the story of "A very big storm" that was introduced to them earlier, the children created their own story on the theme of co-operation. The teacher facilitated the activity by discussing the characters and storyline with them. The discussion reflected on true co-operation towards a common goal of creating their own story. After that, they were in-charge of drawing their respective scenes well to ensure that the overall story had a smooth flow.
